We were walking the beach at Corolla, NC, on a perfectly sunny late afternoon, when I was struck by the image of two Ring-billed Gulls and their reflections. They looked so content. Their webbed feet were in the shallow water, cooling off, and they were bathing in the warmth of the sun. It was as if they were on vacation, finally relaxed and enjoying time together.
Being late afternoon, the strong blue sky is mirrored off the water, enveloping the white and gray Seagulls in a Cerulean blue. Ankle deep, their bright yellow legs meet the water and connect them to their reflections.
Their eyes have a striking red ring around them and the sun adds a sparkle.
I find this scene calming and symbolic of what “beach time” means to us. Those who like a getaway to the beach for a little R & R can hopefully relate to this painting. It’s all about having and enjoying a carefree moment.
